Segregomat: Simplifying Waste Sorting

2020

In 2020, a coffee chat with programmer friends about waste sorting frustrations in Wroclaw sparked an ambitious project. What began as casual conversation evolved into Segregomat - an app to make recycling as intuitive as checking the weather. I took on multiple roles as UX/UI designer, product owner, and project manager, embracing a challenge that would prove both demanding and rewarding.

Project Overview

Have you ever stood in front of recycling bins, confused about where to throw something? We've all been there. Our mission was simple yet ambitious: create an app that makes waste sorting second nature. We wanted to transform those moments of uncertainty into confident decisions, helping users contribute to environmental sustainability without breaking their daily rhythm.

Segregomat emerged as our answer – a smart companion that takes the guesswork out of waste sorting.

Approach

Our approach centered on understanding real people's recycling habits and pain points. We spent countless hours observing how people interact with waste sorting systems, conducting interviews at local recycling centers, and running workshops with community members of all ages.

Process

Our journey began with comprehensive research: conducting 50+ resident interviews, shadowing recycling center operations, running workshops with environmental experts, and extensive prototype testing. Throughout iterative design sprints, we maintained a delicate balance – simplifying waste sorting while preserving educational value. Every design choice was guided by our mission to eliminate confusion while keeping users informed and engaged in environmental responsibility.

We believed that making recycling easy shouldn't mean oversimplifying environmental responsibility.

Segregomat became a user-friendly app with a clean layout that makes proper waste disposal effortless.

Our interface design embodies simplicity through clean lines, intuitive gestures, and a nature-inspired color scheme, while maintaining clear visual hierarchy. We prioritized accessibility by incorporating comprehensive features: voice-over support, customizable text sizes, high-contrast modes, and multi-language support in Polish, English, and Ukrainian. The color-blind friendly design ensures that Segregomat remains accessible to all users, regardless of their visual capabilities.

Achievements

The Segregomat project brought several key wins: we created Wroclaw's first waste-sorting app that actually made a difference in the community, reaching users in three languages. Our team turned complex recycling rules into simple, accessible solutions through extensive user research and testing. I'm particularly proud of how we brought together designers, developers, and environmental experts to create something that not only looks good but actually helps people make better environmental choices every day. The project also helped me grow professionally, successfully wearing multiple hats as UX/UI designer, product owner, and project manager.
