Radio Broadcasting App

A mobile app that lets anyone create and broadcast a real radio station using actual radio waves, not just internet streaming.

problem

Starting a radio station has always been prohibitively complex. Between licensing fees, broadcasting equipment, studio space, and technical expertise, most people who wanted to share music and connect with listeners were shut out entirely. Internet radio lowered some barriers, but it created new ones. Music licensing for streaming is expensive and legally complicated. The technology still required setup that wasn't exactly plug-and-play. And fundamentally, internet radio doesn't feel like real radio. It lacks the immediacy and authenticity of live broadcasting. The gap between wanting to be on air and actually making it happen was still too wide for most people.

solution

myo.radio is a mobile app that transforms your phone into a legitimate radio station by broadcasting over real radio waves rather than internet streaming alone. This technical approach solves the music licensing challenges that typically block independent broadcasters, allowing users to legally stream music as part of their station without navigating complicated rights management. The app handles the technical complexity behind the scenes, making it possible for aspiring DJs, content creators, and music enthusiasts to go live, play music, and build audiences directly from their mobile devices. Through an intuitive interface and revolutionary technology, myo.radio democratizes radio broadcasting for anyone with a phone.

The startup had already coded a working app, but it lacked any real design direction or visual identity.

I joined myo.radio as Chief of Product and sole designer in August 2025, right after completing my work with Ailean. The product functioned technically but didn't have a brand, a voice, or a cohesive user experience. The founders recognized that to bring this revolutionary technology to market, they needed more than just working code. They needed a product that felt approachable, trustworthy, and exciting. My role was to build everything from the ground up: logo, branding, tone of voice, UX/UI, animations, and social media presence.

The journey began with the logo, which became the foundation of the entire visual identity. I combined the shape of an old-timey radio with a person listening to music, creating a mark that felt both nostalgic and modern. It honored radio's heritage while signaling that this was something new and accessible. The design needed to communicate that myo.radio wasn't trying to replace traditional broadcasting but rather open it up to everyone who'd been left out. From there, I developed the complete visual system and established a tone of voice that matched the product's mission: making radio broadcasting feel possible, exciting, and within reach for anyone who'd ever wanted to go on air.

The UX and UI work required balancing technical capability with simplicity. We're in pre-seed stage, actively testing with a limited user base while seeking financing. Early feedback revealed what mattered most to users. Light mode and dark mode support turned out to be essential rather than optional. Users wanted the app to work seamlessly whether they were broadcasting at night or outdoors in daylight. Some features were functional but needed refinement. The "on air" button became a focal point of the design. It lets users tap once to pause their music and go live instantly, and testers described it as addictive. But we discovered technical challenges that required UX solutions. An echo issue on the backend meant users could hear themselves during broadcasts, which broke the flow. The on-screen data shown during live sessions also needed better clarity. Right now it displays speaking time and the next song queued in the playlist, but the presentation wasn't intuitive enough for users to parse quickly while managing a live broadcast.

To make the design and development process more efficient, I used AI coding tools like Windsurf alongside traditional design software. This allowed me to prototype features, test interactions, and implement visual elements without constant developer handoffs. In two months, I established the brand identity, designed the full interface across multiple screens, created animations for onboarding and key interactions, and built out the complete social media branding. The workload was intense as the sole designer, but the autonomy meant decisions happened quickly and we could iterate based on real user feedback rather than assumptions.

Since launching our early testing phase, myo.radio has received genuinely encouraging feedback despite the small sample size. Users are scheduling full-day broadcasts, mixing music with jingles and news segments just like professional radio stations. Others are going live from clubs and stadiums, covering events in real time with smooth handoffs and low enough latency to keep pace with what's happening. One tester mentioned that it "finally feels like real radio again," which captured exactly what we set out to create. Another said the ON AIR button lets them queue the next track while talking and drop jingles without breaking flow, highlighting the immediacy and control the product enables. The Swiss hosting infrastructure has held up well even during peak usage times, and users have praised how quickly they can get set up and start broadcasting.

The response from our target audience has validated the design direction. We're making product decisions based on user data from day one, tracking engagement patterns, monitoring pain points, and iterating on features that matter most. Radio is growing as part of the economy, and myo.radio is positioned to open up broadcasting to aspiring DJs, content creators, and music enthusiasts who've always wanted to be on air but never had access to the technology or resources. The product isn't finished. We're still refining features, fixing technical issues like the echo problem, and working to make the interface even more intuitive for live broadcasting scenarios. But it's alive, it's being used in real contexts, and every round of testing makes it better. The brand now has an identity that resonates with users, and the product has a foundation to grow on as we move toward full launch.
